Trenchless Drilling Technologies

Trenchless drilling technologies — horizontal directional drilling, pipe jacking and pipe bursting methods banner

Trenchless drilling technologies are the methods of installing pipe and cable lines underground without opening a trench at the surface. In this section we describe the four methods Deltek applies in the field and the main components of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) one by one: what HDD is, the construction method and rig classes; drill rods, steering heads and reamers; walk-over and magnetic locating systems; drilling fluid. The other trenchless methods are pipe jacking / pipe ramming (pipe pushing, auger boring, microtunnelling), trenchless pipe bursting and the smart undergrounding approach. The topic guides are long-form pages that explain horizontal drilling and trenchless boring from the ground up.

Horizontal Directional Drilling8 pages

What is HDD?What is horizontal directional drilling (HDD)? From the first crossing in 1972 to today: 3D steering underground, the pilot bore, reaming and pullback stages.
HDD Method StatementThe HDD construction method step by step: rig set-up, pilot bore, drilling fluid, reaming with the back reamer, and pulling the pipe in with a swivel.
HDD RigHDD rigs: thrust, pullback and torque; set-up and logistics of small, medium and large horizontal directional drilling rigs, and choosing the right machine.
Drill PipesHDD drill rods: diameter and length ranges, carbon and titanium alloys, CrMo threaded tool joints, friction welding, elastic deformation and use on site.
Steering HeadThe HDD steering head: duckbill head, sonde housing, steering with an angled bit, carbide and cone bits, and fluid-driven rock drilling with a mud motor.
ReamerThe reamer enlarges the pilot hole to the pipe diameter: staged reaming, fly cutter, barrel reamer and hole opener types, and matching the reamer to the ground.
Drilling FluidHDD drilling fluid: the six functions of bentonite, water and polymer mud — carrying cuttings, hole stability, cooling, pullback lubrication and protection.

Pipe JackingPipe jacking methods: pipe pushing, auger boring and microtunnelling. Excavation type, face support, ground conditions, diameter limits and choosing the method.
Pipe BurstingTrenchless pipe bursting: using the old line as a guide, breaking it and pulling in a new pipe without excavation; 10–45% upsizing, no trench.
Smart UndergroundingSmart undergrounding: the concept Deltek brought to the sector — consultancy that plans trenchless methods within a measurable, sustainable system.
