A Giant Floating Solar Plant Comes Online in Europe

The floating solar power plant built on a lake formed by a flooded former limestone quarry in Obourg, Belgium, was officially opened this week by energy giant TotalEnergies and global building-materials company Holcim. One of the most striking aspects of the project is the more than 700 metres of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) carried out to bring the electricity generated by the solar panels to the substation.
Europe’s Largest Floating Solar Plant for Self-Consumption
The plant, with 31 MW of installed capacity, has an annual output of 30 GWh of renewable electricity. All of the energy generated is used by Holcim’s industrial facilities for their own consumption, which makes the plant Europe’s largest floating solar power plant dedicated to self-consumption.
HDD Technology Protected the Landscape
One of the most critical infrastructure problems of the project was how to bring the electricity generated by the panels in the middle of the lake to shore. Conventional excavation would have destroyed the natural lake ecosystem and made it impossible for the site to blend into the landscape. So the engineers turned to horizontal directional drilling (HDD).
Along the more than 700-metre bore path there was no damage to the surface; the cable was passed precisely beneath the ground and connected the solar plant to the substation. The application shows concretely how decisive a role HDD plays not only in urban infrastructure projects but also in renewable energy investments that require environmental sensitivity.
Sustainability and Industrial Transformation
Olivier Greiner, General Manager of TotalEnergies Belgium Retail Electricity and Gas, highlighted at the opening ceremony the project’s contribution to Holcim’s decarbonisation targets. Holcim, a global reference in sustainable construction solutions, is through this project both bringing renewable energy to its production sites and turning a former industrial area into living energy production.
